Basketball falls in state semis; four named All-Prep.
The varsity basketball team fell 69-59 at St. Anne's-Belfield in the state VISAA semifinals Friday, March 1.
An illustrious season came to a close, as the group broke the school record for wins (25) and reached the state semifinals for only the second time in the school's history.
StC (25-8) led 30-28 at halftime after a dominating 20-12 second period. The team extended the lead to four before STAB reeled off a 15-1 run to take control of the contest.
StC would cut the lead to five points a few times in the fourth period, but would get no closer.
Brandon Jennings '24 poured in a game-high 27 points for the Saints to go along with seven rebounds and four assists. Sonny Bridges '25 continued his outstanding postseason with a 21-point effort that included three 3-pointers.
Stuart Cosby chipped in with seven points, and Kellen Welch had six rebounds. Star center Darius Gray '26 was hampered with foul trouble all night.
Jennings is headed to VCU and the Saints lose five more seniors, but will return a strong nucleus led by Bridges, Gray, Cosby and Elijah Brandon '26. Several players from the Class of 2025 will step into larger roles as seniors for coach Hamill Jones '00.
A week earlier, Jennings, Bridges and Gray were named to the All-Prep League team. Jennings and Gray were named all-tournament. Jones was named league coach of the year.
