Varsity Basketball Beats Collegiate, Takes Share Of VPL Title
by Edison Pellumbi '25
After losing to STAB in a tight game on the road the day before, everything was up for grabs for the varsity basketball team when they traveled to Collegiate on Friday, February 14. With STAB winning their game, StC had to win in order to take a share of the Prep League championship for the first time since 2016, when they also tied at the top with STAB.
Early in the game, the Saints controlled things. Stuart Cosby '25 had a block on the first possession of the game and then hit a three on the other end of the floor the next possession to set the tone, and the Saints led for the entire first half. Their lead got as big as 34-25 with a few minutes left in the second period, but an important run by the Cougars to end the half cut that advantage to 34-31 at the break.
In the second, the Cougars came out strong. They took their first lead of the game at 37-36 a few minutes into the third quarter. From there on, junior Darius Gray took over the game. As a part of a 38 point effort, he was unguardable in the second half and powered the Saints to an eventual 70-60 victory.
With the win, the Saints move to 21-3 on the year and finish 9-1 in the Prep League, tied with STAB at the top. They lost the coin toss to determine the top seed that was run due to the tie with STAB, so they will be seeded second in the upcoming Prep League tournament. They will host the semi-final match at Scott Gym on Friday, February 21 at 6 PM, when they welcome the winner of the Trinity vs FUMA quarterfinal match.
