Varsity football takes season opener

Jeb Bemiss passed for 200 yards and two scores, and the defense nearly posted a shutout in a 23-3 season-opening victory over St. Stephen's/St. Agnes in varsity football Friday.

Sam Cain '16 caught three passes for 97 yards, including a 54-yarder that set up a 2-yard TD pass to Ned Tazewell for a 10-0 lead.

SS/SA responded with a field goal to cut the lead to 10-3 at halftime. But Bemiss hit Hayden Mitchell for a 19-yard pass that set up a 3-yard TD from Sean Menges '16 in the third period.

A play later, Paul Thompson (10 tackles, 2 for loss) recovered a fumble deep in SS/SA territory. Bemiss took no time, finding John Damgard '17 for a 19-yard score on the very next play for the final margin.

Stefan Alston '16 posted 8 tackles and two sacks for StC. Nick Biddison '18 recovered a fumble, and Jackson Begley '17 had an interception.

The Saints (1-0) will visit Thomas Jefferson Friday at 4 pm.
