Book Adventures with
Reading A-Z
Enrollment: Rising Kindergartners

Description: Reading a book is like taking an
adventure. So let’s get ready for Kindergarten
together, have some fun and make new friends
along the way.We will explore our world by
working with your child’s ability to process visual,
auditory and kinesthetic information. Each day,
we will work with specially crafted activities
which help with letter identification, letter-sound
associations, letter formation, as well as fine-motor
and listening skills.
Using some of the best Early Emergent Literature
designed for beginning readers, each child will
receive individual instruction and have opportunities
to work in small, cooperative groups.We will make
meaningful connections between language and
the written word with books your child can keep
and enjoy all summer long. At the conclusion of
our adventure, your child will receive a “Summer
Fun Pack” for rising Kindergarteners which will
reinforce phonological awareness skills and support
your child’s continued excitement in becoming a
lifelong reader!

Beach Prep 101

Description: What’s the best thing about summer?
Going to the beach! Get your child ready for
your beach vacation by making some things to
bring along on the trip. Campers will design a
t-shirt, a hat or visor, and a beach bag to take
along on their outings this summer.To reactivate
their sleepy pre-reading skills, they will author
their own book to share in the car or enjoy on
the beach. Campers will enjoy summer-themed
literature, a snack, and playground time each day.

Get on Track for First Grade Fun

Description: Rev up those engines half-way
through your summer for a comprehensive
Reading, Writing and Math Review. Let’s keep our
minds fresh on all you learned in Kindergarten
this year. We will work together to practice a variety
of key skills that will help you start first grade off
on the right foot in the fall. We will focus on
blending simple consonant and vowel sounds,
identifying and naming rhyming sounds and
features, sorting similar letter patterns, writing and
sharing, and building comprehension through
reading and listening to stories. We will also have
some fun playing math games and reviewing early
math concepts. It will be a fun and exciting way
to get together with some of your Kindergarten
buddies and get excited about starting first grade.

weary? We have the class for you! Explore math
in a whole new light through puzzles, pattern

of basic math skills through addition and subtraction
facts, problem solving skills, logical reasoning and
spatial math concepts through a rich variety of
math games and strategies.

Description: During this creative writing workshop,
1st and 2nd graders will be encouraged to
think past traditional notions of writing and
WRITE ON…as they become scientists and write
in their observational journals during nature walks,
become artists as they study their environment and
draw to share information, become experts as they
select a topic of interest and teach their friends a
new skill, and become storytellers as they weave
tales of imagination. We will bring our exploration
to a close with an Author’s Breakfast, where parents
will be invited to share in their young writers’
accomplishments.

The Writer and Artist Workshop

Description: During this creative writing and
visual workshop, your 1st and 2nd grader will be
creating visual images through drawing, painting,
and three-dimensional constructions and then
using these creations as a springboard for their
writing. Through this approach, children see the
interconnectedness of art and words and how they
can both be used to tell stories about our world.

Description: Keep up your Spanish ability while
having fun this summer! Speaking and writing
skills will be engaged through a wide variety of
activities, and no class with Señor Bishop would be
complete without a little Spanish singing practice!
Be well prepared for Spanish class in first or second
grade in the Fall by setting aside some time to
chat with your amigos from the past school year.
Crafts and culture activities will also help further
your knowledge of customs from the Spanish
Speaking World, and give you something special
to show for your time spent at camp!

Lovin’ Legos

Description: Become a Lego brick master while
strengthening math skills and problem-solving
abilities. Create your own designs or follow plans

group projects. Computation, configuration, and
developing strategic plans in a variety of
construction activities will be offered in this fun
class with Legos as the primary teaching and
learning tool.
*The Advanced Legos (Session III) is for Rising 3rd,
Rising 4th, and Rising 5th Graders. This class is
designed for the serious brickmaster. Previous Lovin’
Legos experience is preferred, but must be at least 8
years old.

Cookin’ Your Numbers

Description: It’s a math review with eating too!
Each day we’ll explore different math concepts
while making a tasty treat. We’ll stir up some fractions,
fold in some measurement, and whip up
those basic facts. We’ll toss in some money and
time, then mix it all together to cook up and
solve some word problems. Does this sound
yummy to you? Come and join us- you’ll be sure
to have “sum” fun!

“Summer Surfin”

Description: What makes a summer project
more fun? A computer! In this class we’ll use the
computer and an array of software and web 2.0

and friends, and see what websites we like best to
continue learning and having fun all summer
long. We’ll be reading, writing, and practicing
math skills without even knowing it!

Description: From the simplest machines that
helped build the pyramids to rocket engines that
leave the Earth, discover how science and

The Inventors Camp

Description: Discover – Create – Invent. Each day
campers will be given a series of challenges they must
overcome using basic materials, simple machines,
tips from world famous inventors and the most
important thing of all – their minds. Because of
the team-based approach to problem solving these
challenges, this camp is never the same twice.

Description: Join us for a week of fun with amazing
robots! Learn about the uses of robots in our world
and spend time experimenting with super-cool

explore things around them. Use your skills to build
your very own working robot to take home with you.

editor-in-chief of a magazine? Now is your chance!
Join us in collaborating to design, create and present

to explore current events, hot topics and common
interests that will become themes of these new
magazines.You will use computers and literature
to research and create a variety of articles, and
magazine components. Magazines will include
expository and persuasive elements as well as offer
students an opportunity to express themselves
through poetry and narrative writing. Complete
with biographies, editorials and advertisements
these magazines are sure to provide students with
a great opportunity to create something unique
and fun!

online typing games focused on increasing speed
and accuracy. This is not a class which teaches
“touch typing” but instead focuses on practicing

to compete for the highest score of the day and
week. The students will take a break in the middle
to stretch their legs outside and grab a snack before
heading back in for more games!
REQUIREMENT: each student will need to bring
their own laptop that can connect to the internet.

Pre-Algebra Review & Refresh

Description: Students will work on strengthening
proficiency of algebraic skills necessary for success
as they proceed on to Algebra I. This co-ed refresher
course will also venture into some of the algebra I
concepts to be covered in the fall term of algebra I.
In addition, students can expect to utilize laptops
and have hands-on practice with the TI 84 graphing
calculator. Students should have completed Pre-
Algebra prior to enrollment in this class.

Algebra I Enrichment
Enrollment: Rising 7th – 9th graders

Description: This course will cover the basics of
first-year Algebra: equations in one and two variables,
linear functions, slope, system of linear equations,
polynomials, exponents, quadratic functions,
simplifying square roots, factoring, and rational
expressions. The class is designed as fast-paced study,
intended for students who took Algebra 1 during
the 2011-2012 school year and who want to make
sure they have mastered the topics, or for students
eager to accelerate in math and potentially use the
course as a springboard to school-approved
acceleration in their respective school math programs.
Students should have completed Pre-Algebra
prior to enrollment in this class or have been in a
rigorous grade 6 math course.
(Note: St. Christopher’s Middle School students who
wish to accelerate in math must pass a comprehensive
final test at the end of this course in July in order to be
approved for acceleration in grades 7 or 8.)

Description: This course covers the core topics
of Euclidean geometry and is designed for
motivated, hard-working students. This class meets
the requirements of the St. Christopher’s
mathematics department. Pre-requisites include
Algebra I. Algebra II is suggested, but not
mandatory. St. Christopher’s students must get
approval from the Upper School Math Department
Chairman to take this course.
Bridging the Gap: Upper School

Spanish Preparatory Course
Enrollment: Rising 9th-10th graders
(open to both St. Christopher’s
and St. Catherine’s students)
Instructor: Sarah Harper

Times: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Cost: $325
Description: Although the course will be tailored
to the specific needs of the enrolled students, the
instructor will review key grammar concepts
covered in Spanish 1. This course is recommended
for students retaking Spanish 1 after the 8th or
9th grade or who would benefit from a review
before starting Spanish 2, as well as for students
who are new to St. Christopher’s and St. Catherine’s
that do not have a solid Spanish background. The
course will involve reading and writing skills, but the
primary focus will be on improving interactional
skills (i.e., listening and speaking). This class will
not be confined to the classroom; we will branch
out into the larger community and learn by
doing, whenever possible.

Biblical Studies
Enrollment: Rising 10th graders
Instructor: Nelson Reveley
Dates: 6/6 - 6/23
Time: 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Cost: $585
Description: This course fulfills St. Christopher’s
Biblical Studies requirement for 10th grade. All
boys must take this course, as well as an upper
level religion course in their junior or senior year,
to complete their religion credit and graduate.
Taking Biblical Studies over the summer will
allow 10th graders some free time during the
coming year. Using the gospel of Mark as a lens,
this course critically examines the life of Christ.

The Roots of Religious Faith
Enrollment: Rising 11th – 12th graders
Instructor: Nelson Reveley
Dates: 6/6 - 6/23
Time: 1:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Cost: $585
Description: In this course we will explore the
long fought debate between those who proclaim
faith in God and those who deny it. We will focus
primarily on God from Jewish and Christian
perspectives and study the reasons behind people’s
belief in God. We will also examine whether science
and religion are truly mortal enemies after all.
One fundamental question that will arise
throughout the course is, “Can you believe it?”
