The SPAM Trophy Returns "Home" for 11th Straight Year

Coach Carrier
Charlie Branch pushed the individual SPAM title streak to 10 years for STC runners while the team pushed their win streak to 11.
Thank you all for the support out there today.  It was also great to see Dr. Hunter, Mr. Cross, Mr. Chewning, Mr. Horne, Mr. Z, and Mr. Miller who was at STC for many years (coached with me for many years when I started in 2006), started this race with Collegiate's Coach Fleming in 2005, and still makes it back every year for the race.  Plus, after last year's weather in the 40s with light rain, this was much better this year.  This race is filled with fun traditions from watching McFarland, USA in a study hall before SPAM, running up to Bandy from STC as the warm-up, the time prediction contest, the wall clearances, and all the fun prizes.  Maybe we even added a new tradition today with the post-meet gathering of both Saints MS teams.

Going into the race today, it was all about the fun, but there were several other layers to the meet.  Due to the state meet being a week later than normal, this was the first time we did SPAM just three days after pouring in a ton of effort at states.  That being said, I think we were a little sluggish today and the predictions were all over time except Guy who was 15 seconds under.  Burn was the closest guess for us at 13 seconds off, just 3 seconds from getting an award, then Guy, then Teddy at 18 seconds off.  Henry and Brennan were each 20 seconds off.  We don't do any splits here and the long, gradual uphill 3 times can certainly get to the legs, but it is still a fun race nevertheless.

We did come in already knowing we were going to win our 11th straight SPAM race and we knew we would at least go 1st through 5th to earn a perfect score of 15 for the 3rd time in meet history (2017 & 2018).  However, one other layer to this was that we came in 1st through 6th and were 2 seconds from getting our 7th runner (Brennan) in front of their 1st runner to earn the "perfect" score of 15-50.  As such, the score today of 15-49 was the largest margin of victory in SPAM history, surpassing the 2017 team that won 15-48.  Charlie Branch logged the individual win to keep that streak alive as well as we have won the individual title every year since 2015.  His time of 11:41 put him 5th on the all-time list.  We only keep track of 15, but Davis' time of 12:08 puts him 18th on the all-time list.
