Saints Lose Defensive Battle against WFS

by Hil Butler '26
On Saturday, October 11, the Saints varsity football team traveled to Woodberry Forest School to take on the Tigers in what would become a defensive battle that the Saints ultimately lost 10-0.

Although the Saints (1-1 Prep League, 4-3) often created opportunities on defense, they failed to capitalize with meaningful drives and were held scoreless by the Tigers (4-0), who have let up an average of less than 9 points on the season.

The offense, held back by numerous TFLs and no-gains, only managed to net 40 rushing yards and 89 passing yards. Outside a 12-yard rush by RB Michael Farley Jr. ‘26 and an impressive completion into 4-man coverage to WR Jaerron Johnson ‘27, they struggled to get big gains.

The Saints defense put up an impressive performance, only letting up one touchdown and one field goal. DB Deacon Begley ‘25, LB Lance Clelland ‘27, DL Darius Gray ‘26, and LB Elijah Brandon ‘26 all recorded sacks, while DL Drew Pendelbury ‘26 forced a fumble that was recovered by LB Bowan Ireland ‘27. The team as a whole recorded 7 TFLs. DB Collin Johnson ‘26 had the Saints’ one interception, which he returned for 9 yards.
Overall, the Saints’ defense had a dominating performance, but the team was held back by offensive play that could not gain momentum against Woodberry’s reliable defense.

For their next matchup, the Saints will travel to Trinity Episcopal School on Saturday, October 19 at 1 pm to take on the 3-2 Titans, where they hope to retake momentum.
