Varsity Basketball Takes Thrilling Victory Over John Marshall

by Edison Pellumbi '25
On a Friday night, the Saints welcomed the John Marshall Justices to a packed Scott Gym for one of their highest-profile games in program history.  Coming into the game, John Marshall was 10-2 playing a national schedule, and was ranked as a top 15 team in the country on some sites.

Early on, the Saints struggled.  John Marshall got out to an early 9-0 lead, and the Saints couldn't find the bottom of the net for the first half of the first quarter.  Darius Gray '26 hit a three with less than four minutes to play, and that got the Saints offense going.  From there on, the threes continued to fall for the Saints.  They played from behind most of the first half, but going into the half, they trailed by just two points.

In the second, the Saints' threes continued to fall.  The leading shooter for the Saints was Stuart Cosby '25, nailing five shots from outside the arc, accounting for all 15 of his points on the night.  Even with a significant size disadvantage, the Saints controlled the board all night, as well as playing very strong interior defense.  Going into the 4th, they were holding onto a slim two-point lead.

In the 4th, the Saints controlled the game with a multi-possession lead for the majority of the quarter.  In a very low-scoring final period, the Justices managed to whittle the lead to just one point with just over twenty seconds to play.  In the biggest possession of the night, Brandon Jennings '24 came up with a steal, got fouled, and went to the line for two free throws.  He hit both, the final of his twenty-four points on the night.  With just a few seconds to play, the Saints came up with one more stand as Kellen Welch '24 intercepted a pass, and they officially pulled off an incredible win.

They move to 10-2 on the year, as they kick off VISAA play on Tuesday, January 9 at 6 pm when they take on Woodberry at home.
