In this introductory class, you will learn the essential basics of drawing: line, value,
proportion, the effects of light on geometric forms, the elements of design and
composition, and color theory. Students will learn to see and accurately draw
volumes in space—with knowledge of highlight, shadow, zone of tangency, cast
shadow, and reflected light. Class exercises and still-life set-ups are designed to
expand your drawing and observational skills. Students will also learn the old
master method of “sight-size drawing.” We will work with several drawing
media—graphite, charcoal, sanguine, as well as pastels (semi-hard chalk pastels).
Students will develop their drawing expertise as they develop their own personal
style. Each class features instructor demonstrations, individual instruction, and
group critiques.
